Kingdom Rush is a tower-defense series that began in 2011 and has been developed by Ironhide Game Studio throughout. Genesis is the sixth tower-defense entry and the eighth game overall. Understanding why those two numbers differ, and who Vez'nan is, is most of the context you need.

The Eight Games
| # | Title | First released | Premise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kingdom Rush | July 28, 2011 | Command the Linirean army to stop the wizard Vez'nan and his Dark Army |
| 2 | Kingdom Rush: Frontiers | June 6, 2013 | Stop Lord Malagar, an apprentice of Vez'nan |
| 3 | Kingdom Rush: Origins | November 20, 2014 | A prequel set roughly thirty years earlier |
| 4 | Kingdom Rush: Vengeance | November 22, 2018 | You play as Vez'nan, returning to Linirea |
| 5 | Legends of Kingdom Rush | June 11, 2021 | A turn-based RPG on a hex grid, the only non-tower-defense mainline entry |
| 6 | Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance | July 25, 2024 | Linirea and the Dark Army form an uneasy alliance |
| 7 | Kingdom Rush: Battles | October 9, 2025 | The first PvP game, explicitly outside the canon story |
| 8 | Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis | September 24, 2026 | A time-travel prequel about Vez'nan's origin |
Why "Sixth" And "Eighth" Are Both Right
Ironhide numbers its tower-defense games separately from the franchise as a whole. Counting only tower-defense entries: Kingdom Rush, Frontiers, Origins, Vengeance, Alliance and Genesis, which makes Genesis the sixth. Counting every release, including the RPG and the PvP game, makes it the eighth.
The convention of putting the number first began with Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance. Before that, entries were titled by subtitle alone.
Vez'nan Is The Spine Of The Series
Vez'nan is the franchise's central character: leader of the Dark Army, King Denas's arch-nemesis, and the reason nearly everything after Origins happens.
| Game | Vez'nan's role |
|---|---|
| Origins | A hero and major character, before the fall |
| Kingdom Rush (2011) | The main antagonist and final boss |
| Frontiers | A posthumous overarching antagonist |
| Vengeance | The overarching protagonist. You play as him |
| Legends of Kingdom Rush | A minor character |
| Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance | One of the main protagonists, in an uneasy alliance with Linirea |
| Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis | The young Vez'nan, the man you are sent back to stop |
No other character in the series moves across that many roles. A villain who becomes the player character and then an ally is the reason the series' chronology is worth mapping at all, and the characters page covers his role in Genesis specifically.
How Genesis Connects
| Link | Detail |
|---|---|
| It is an alternate-timeline prequel | Genesis exists because Gerald Lightseeker is sent backwards in time after a devastating attack on the Kingdom by Vez'nan |
| The setting is the original game's world, earlier | Back to the original Kingdom Rush lands, at a time when the legends were just beginning |
| The roster is largely the classic cast, younger | Six of the twelve heroes are returning characters, most from the 2011 game |
| Ignore the era, and it is still Linirea | The same medieval fantasy atmosphere and landscapes, revisited rather than replaced. The story page covers the regions |
| Dual heroes come from Alliance | Fielding two heroes per stage was introduced in Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance |
| It is not a remake | Original campaign, new factions, new mechanics, new story |
Which Heroes Came Back
The returning roster is the clearest expression of the prequel idea. The heroes page has the full table, but the concept is simple: these are the people from the first game, decades earlier.
- Gerald Lightseeker, the 2011 hero, who survived Vez'nan's attack and was sent back to prevent the Dark Wizard from using the Tear of Elynie.
- Bolin Farslayer, head of security at the Western Wall until an orc invasion broke through.
- Malik Hammerfury, freed from the Blood Quarry, who later settled in Hammerhold.
- Ignus, shown before he mastered fire, when his human form still broke through.
- Ashbite, the dragon who bonded with Prince Denas and his army.
Those backstories come from the game's own hero descriptions as recorded by the community wiki, so we label them partial rather than official.
Do You Need To Have Played Them?
No. Genesis is designed as an original story rather than a sequel, and nothing about the campaign depends on knowing the earlier games. Classic Mode rewards nostalgia for the 2011 tower lines, and that is the full extent of the requirement.
If you want the emotional version of the story, Origins and the original game are the two that matter most. If you want to know why the villain matters, play Vengeance.
